What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a common eye condition that affects central vision. It happens when the light-sensitive cells in the macula, an area of the retina at the back of your eye, start to deteriorate. As these cells break down, they cannot absorb light or transmit images to the brain like healthy cells do. This can cause vision loss and other symptoms of AMD. Macular degeneration affects millions of people, particularly those aged 50 and older. Risk factors include a family history of AMD, smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and excessive sun exposure.

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

Like various other eye diseases, there are no initial symptoms in the early stages of the disease. This is why routine eye exams are critical, especially if you have a family history of the condition. However, as macular degeneration begins to advance, these are some of the signs you can expect:

  • Reduced central vision
  • Difficulty adapting to dim or dark rooms
  • Blurry words and fading colors
  • Needing bright lights to read prints or work on a computer

These symptoms don't always signify macular degeneration. Only a qualified eye doctor can make the proper diagnosis.

Treatment for Macular Degeneration

There is no cure for macular degeneration, but we can help you slow the progression of the disease in several ways. They include prescription medication, injections, laser surgery, or prescription lenses. Each patient is different, and the treatment you receive is based on the severity of your disease.

Monitoring the condition is also important to ensure your health remains stable. We create a personalized plan tailored to your individual needs and lifestyle. An optometrist from our staff will be able to share the plan details with you once you come in for an exam.
