Dry eye is one of the most common eye issues that people deal with constantly. While it may not seem like a huge deal to some, for others, it is a chronic syndrome that makes it challenging to go about their daily lives. Fortunately, minor and chronic dry eye can be treated by an optometry specialist. What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is an eye condition in which the eyes do not create a sufficient amount of tears to moisturize the eyes or the tears dissolve too quickly. Sometimes, it can also occur when the tear composition is not functioning properly. Even though dry eye is common and produces irritating symptoms, there are a few ways to treat it.

Dry Eye Causes

There are a few different factors that might be causing your dry eye. It can be caused by allergies, prolonged exposure to computer screens or electronic screens, certain medications, LASIK surgery, dry or windy weather, or a dysfunction of the tear glands within the eye.

Dry Eye Symptoms

  • Sensitivity to light
  • Dry, burning, stinging, or scratchy sensation
  • Red eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Eye fatigue or blurred vision
  • A sensation that something is in the eyes

The key to minimizing the symptoms of dry eye is to find out what is causing it. Knowing what is triggering your dry eye can help our optometry doctor determine what kind of treatment is going to be most effective for reducing the symptoms.

Dry Eye Treatment

One of the most common treatments for dry eye is medicated eye drops. Medicated drops help to increase the natural tear production in your eyes so that they stay hydrated. If you have dry eye as the result of allergies, our eye doctor in Conroe may suggest an allergy medication.

If it is caused by a medication, you may have to visit to your health practitioner to determine if you should continue with the medication or if it can be discontinued. For those that have dry eye that resulted from a gland dysfunction, you may need the assistance of a medical device to correct the issue.
